CHILDREN

One of our favorite places that still needs a great deal of help is the Home of Rescued and Afflicted Children in Nepal, otherwise known as HORAC.

This home for rescued street children faces immediate challenges with lodging, health care, and education

KB Shaw and his wife rescued over 40 children from the street and have been working to support them ever since.  They had no money (still don't) and already had three children of their own, but their compassion led them to never turn anyone away.  To support these children they visit local merchants and go door to door to ask for rice, vegetables, or needed supplies - yet they often come up short.

On their website, their vision is to: "make the provision of a home, love, happiness, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual nourishment, the highest level of education possible, and a hope for a bright future for the orphaned, destitute, outcast, unloved, needy, sick, handicapped and/or dying persons. We wish to offer the children a residence with, sufficient playground, support them to attend school, and connect them to a place of worship, and give them medical care and other facilities that help the children to succeed."

We found this childrens home from an American nurses recommendation, and when we got there we were greeted with more love than you can imagine.  We were able to address some immediate concerns - bought a tank to store fresh water, funded a few bunk beds, and created a sun-shade, but the long-term survival of this home depends on continued help and support.  As they're heading into winter, many of the children still lack school uniforms, school fees paid, and go hungry on occasion.  About half of the children don't have beds and they still cook over a fire on the roof.  We'd love to meet these needs within the coming weeks.

Just a bit of personal observance from our few weeks there - the owners children sleep with the same arrangements as the rescued children with no special treatment or favoritism, and the children are taught extremely well and are kind, considerate, and thoughtful.  They all have chores and work together, and KB and his wife are the most patient and loving people we've come across.

If you ever wonder about how your money is spent, or if the kids are well taken care of at the place you choose to donate to - well, if our opinion matters, this is one HOME (not a shelter or orphange) you would be proud to support.

They need everything from rice, more beds, school fees, clothes, games, or water filters and ANY amount helps.  They also love visitors, so if you are in Katmandu please contact them trough their website and tell them we sent you.  Please feel free to contribute as you can and we will forward it along asap.
